'A community needs a soul if it is to become a true home for human beings. You the people must give it this soul.' ~Pope John Paul II
The riots in London and other cities across Britain have surprised many and particularly that it's all happening during the month of August which is normally the quietest month of the year. The rioting, violence and looting are not what many have expected to see. Yet it also comes as no surprise to those who have been watching the cracks more closely. Many of the young people taking part have been described as feeling trapped in the social system. They're disconnected from their community and they just don't care. Sadly the endless violence enables them to identify with each other and unites them with many others who feel deprived and let down. The riots taking place since last weekend are a reminder how delicate human relationships are. A good community should allow every age group to feel a sense of belonging and that each person is valued and important. This is at the heart of the Gospel message, that no person or group should ever feel isolated or ignored. When isolation and neglect of the needs of the human spirit are ignored, then a community has lost its soul. This is a huge loss. It would be a shame if we were to take our local community for granted. Every single one of us has such a vital part to play in giving it a soul or life. |
