'Spirituality is recognizing and celebrating that we are all inextricably connected to each other by a power greater than all of us, and that our connection to that power and to one another is grounded in love and compassion. Practicing spirituality brings a sense of perspective, meaning and purpose to our lives.' ~Brené Brown
Tomorrow Wednesday we move into February. Already we notice a stretch in daylight and there is a hint of spring in the air. But we do not get carried away just yet. The feast of St Brigid is always celebrated on Feb 1st. Traditionally it marks the arrival of spring. The feast of St Brigid is a day to reflect on all our present blessings and all the good around us. She had time for everyone including the poor but above all she inspired people to be themselves. She encouraged them to be proud of who they were, to be proud of their roots, to be proud of their gifts and talents and to be proud of their faith.
Using rushes she wove them all into a cross, to remind us that all the different strands of our lives are connected. They are connected not by chance but by the gentle presence of God in our lives. Brigid gathers our rushes of sorrow and blessings, of happiness and pain, tears and laughter, kindness and caring, of voluntary groups and organisations, of families, relations and friends, of schools and hospitals, of work, sport and recreation and all the little things we do with faith, hope and love. Brigid weaves them all with loving hands into something richer and more beautiful. For her God is always at the centre of everything we do, not just the good parts but simply everything. We ask her many blessings on us as we approach a new month tomorrow.

'When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy - care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.' ~Jean Bolen
Whatever gift or gifts you got for Christmas, I hope it was something practical and useful. It is surprising the amount of gifts people get that are never used and get put away never to be seen again. I gave my mum 10 bags of 'Gee Up' which is basically horse manure! It is classed as organic and is a beautiful soil enricher. It releases its goodness not all at once but with time. My Mum is big into her gardening and always looks forward to a garden full of colour, particularly during the spring and summer months. She was happy to get her 10 bags of organic horse manure and I was happy to provide such a practical gift.
We were at my sister's home for dinner at the start of the New Year. She had friends visiting from Cork city and the conversation turned to what we gave each other for Christmas. When they heard that I gave my mother 10 bags of horse manure they were in complete horror and rolled in laughter and amusement that I could do such a thing! The more I explained that it was an investment, that the results will come with time and that the end result will be beautiful colourful flowers, failed to make an impact. They just couldn't get the concept of giving 'horse manure' as a gift to someone! The moral of the story is you just can't win!
But adding manure to shrubs, plants, flowers and young trees does make sense. The manure slowly releases valuable nutrients that are slowly soaked up. Over time the plant flourishes, it grows, it thrives and it flowers abundantly. There is a deeper spiritual meaning too. Like adding manure, every time we nourish our spirit/soul is time well spent. It can be done in a variety of ways, from a simple quiet prayer, visiting a church, going to Mass, attending a prayer service, going for a walk, taking time to be silent, reading scripture, being mindful and lots of other ways.
But whatever we do it's like adding the manure. We may not feel the effects right away even though we sometimes do. But the real effects are revealed with time and the flowers/blessings that follow, do make it all worthwhile. Even when hit with a crisis or some challenge in life, we are in a better position to deal with it. Some may say that taking time to nourish ourselves spiritually isn't worth the effort, but many can and will say it makes all the difference. How are you going to nourish your spirit/soul this week?

'The "I's" are keys to seizing the day. They're the ignition key that turns over the creative engine. It's the "I's" that draw from that great storehouse of talent, knowledge and experience.' ~Louis Schmier
Another "I" that is so important is the word idea. I have been at the BT Young Scientist and Technology exhibition in Dublin during the past week. The 550 amazing projects at the 2017 exhibition all started with an idea. This idea took hold, gathered pace and eventually formed a science project. The best ideas come to nothing unless nurtured and given time. We all have ideas to do something different, an idea to nourish our spiritual side, an idea to slow down, an idea to connect better with our nearest and dearest, an idea to get fitter and other ideas that we know are important. But with so many of them they drift away, fail to take root and disappear. Why not begin with one idea, give it energy, let it begin to energise you and see where it takes you?
An appropriate prayer might be the following: Lord, give me the imagination to be open to new things and ideas in my life, as I embrace this new journey through 2017. Help me to get involved in all that's good and positive, to be inspired by you and your word, to include others in all I do and the insight to see each day as a precious gift from you. |
