'Often the first sign of friendship is that we are delighted to discover the world in a similar way. We find ourselves laughing at the same jokes, enjoying the same novels, sharing other friends. We treasure the same things. Similarly we are God's friends not by thinking things about God but seeing things with God, through God's eyes as it were.' ~Timothy Radcliffe

Good and faithful friends are such treasures. We would simply be lost without them. Life would indeed be difficult, lonely and frustrating if we didn't have the company of friends. There is a world of a difference between a friend and an acquaintance. An acquaintance is someone we know through work or someone who lives in the same area. We may know many acquaintances but our real and true friends can often be counted in one hand.

It would be nice to think of God as a friend rather than an acquaintance. As a friend God is in touch with our every need. Rather than someone aloof, distant and separate, God is someone who is close and near. There is a lovely line in one of Paul's letter to the Romans when he says: "If God is for us, who can be against us". It is comforting to know that we are not on our own. There are times in our lives when it does feel like an uphill struggle. Some people it seems are against us, time is against us, circumstances outside of our control are against us, life is against us and even sometimes it seems God is against us.

Pages, books and libraries can be filled with things written about God, but there is one absolute certainty, God is not against us. God is never out to get us, never out to make life difficult; never out to trip us up. God is our friend and always will be. Timothy Radcliffe explains it very well: God is our friend because God is with us through absolutely everything. In the midst of these beautiful warm midsummer days, it is good to appreciate that in God's eyes we are indeed special, loved and always included.

Every morning when Fr.Joe Young gets out of bed he asks Jesus, 'What can I do today that can make a difference in just one person's life?' ~Sue Leonard

Fr.Joe Young's commitment to justice and to the poor of Limerick has cost him a lot over the years but he remains full of hope, with a deep trust in the goodness of God. His words should also fill us with hope as well. Our task is never to change the world or solve all the problems around us. But our task is to try and make a difference in just one person's life. Again this does not have to be earth shattering. A humble simple smile, a word of encouragement or a word of thanks can be enough inspiration to give another person a huge lift and a boost. It may not seem much to us but to that person it can mean the world. Why not make it our prayer too: Jesus, What can I do today that can make a difference in just one person's life

The Second Ten Commandments ~Author Unknown

1. Thou shall not worry, for worry is the most unproductive of all human activities.
2. Thou shall not be fearful, for most of the things we fear never come to pass.
3. Thou shall not cross bridges before you come to them, for no one yet has succeeded in accomplishing this.
4. Thou shall face each problem as it comes. You can only handle one at a time anyway.
5. Thou shall not take problems to bed with you, for they make very poor bed partners!
6. Thou shall not borrow other people's problems. They can better care for them than you can.
7. Thou shall not try to relive yesterday as it is forever gone. Concentrate on what is happening in your life and be happy as best you can today.
8. Thou shall be a good listener, for only when you listen do you hear ideas different from your own. It is hard to learn something new when you are talking, and some people do know more than you do.
9. Thou shall not become "bogged down" by frustration, for 90% of it is rooted in self-pity and will only interfere with positive action.
10. Thou shall count thy blessings, never overlooking the small ones, for a lot of small blessings add up to big ones.

Jesus also said, 'What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.' ~Mark 4:28-31

Our Thought For Today is by Jane Mellett called 'From small seeds'

The parable of the mustard seed seems pretty straight forward at first glance, but as always there is more to it than first meets the eye. Jesus did not compare the Kingdom of God to a majestic tree. There is an ancient text which forbade planting mustard seeds in Palestinian gardens because the shrub takes over wherever it is planted. It is wild, gets out of control, and attracts unwanted birds. The kingdom of God grows from something small to something large, but more than that, its growth is overwhelming and it will grow even where it is not wanted. Author and activist, Shane Claiborne, compares it to kudzu, a wild vine that could blanket entire mountain areas, smother trees, even crack cement buildings.

People of Jesus' time may have preferred the image of the lofty 'cedars of Lebanon' to explain God's kingdom, where the nations could build nests like the eagles do. Now that image may have gotten a few cheers from the crowd! Mustard plants however, only stand a few feet tall. Jesus is turning the ideals of power and triumph on their head again. The image we have here is of the birds who find a home in this little shrub which cannot be curtailed. It will grow even where it is not wanted. Watch out this week for glimpses of this 'mustard seed' kingdom quietly growing.

Thought For The Week

'In Asia they say that life is a great river and it will flow, no matter what you do or don't do. We can decide to flow with the river or to battle it.' ~Vincent Travers

The beautiful fine weather in recent weeks has been such a blessing. The colours of summer have reached a beautiful crescendo. The farming community who were in a very difficult place a few months ago have had a great chance to bring in silage and hay. Everyone seems to be in better form and a run of good weather definitely brings a feel good factor. Despite the fine dry spell there were some exceptions. A week ago there was a band of thundery showers that crossed Ireland from the east. Some places escaped the rain while other places like Millstreet had complete downpours. Streams and rivers that were at a standstill became raging torrents with flooding in some places.

So much can be said about rivers. We are only too aware of the great power of a river in flood and in contrast the beauty of a gentle flowing river in the height of summer. Every river has an energy and flow that nothing can stop. Even a dam has its limits. Comparing life to a river is a good image. The many meandering twists and turns of a river reflect life and its unpredictability. Every day brings us some measure of how uncertain life can be. Life can be so uplifting and rewarding but just as quick it can be cruel and unforgiving. We have no option but to go with the flow.

Where does God come into the whole picture? I like the image of the banks on either side of the river that somehow guide the flow of the river. God is there to guide us along through the unpredictable nature of life. It may seem sometimes that God is not around because rivers do flood but even in a flood the banks on either side are still doing a job. Even when the river floods out over the banks on either side, there comes a time when the river will gently recede back to where things were.

We pray for each other this week. We include special prayers for any person or family going through a difficult time and whose life circumstance can be compared to a river in flood. We also include prayers for those continuing to do the Junior and Leaving Cert exams during the coming week.

'Everything can be taken from us except one thing, the last of human freedoms - to choose one's own attitude in any given set of circumstances' ~Viktor Frankl

Viktor Frankl was No. 119,104 in a concentration camp during the second World War. He worked many hours alone and with no escape he was helpless. In such a miserable situation many of us would wilt into utter misery but he always kept a positive spirit. He only focussed on thoughts that empowered him and always took great comfort from the beauty of nature around him. Each of us too has the freedom to choose our own attitude in life and in any given situation. No matter how powerless we may be, we can turn any positive or chink of light available to our advantage.

Thought For The Week

It is lovely to have a nice long relaxed June Bank Holiday weekend and thankfully lovely summer weather has arrived. Any day can bring mixed emotions for us depending on what is going on in our personal lives. It is always good to know that right now people do care and that you are significant and special. Sometimes we forget this. It is good to know that this weekend and especially right now...

Somebody is very proud of you.
Somebody is thinking of you.
Somebody is caring about you.
Somebody misses you.
Somebody wants to talk to you.
Somebody wants to be with you.
Somebody hopes you aren't in trouble.
Somebody is thankful for the support you have provided.
Somebody wants to hold your hand.
Somebody hopes everything turns out all right.
Somebody wants you to be happy.
Somebody wants you to find him/her.
Somebody is celebrating your successes.
Somebody wants to give you a gift.
Somebody thinks that you are a gift.
Somebody wants to hug you.
Somebody is saying a prayer for you right now.
Somebody loves you.
Somebody admires your strength.
Somebody feels good in, near and around the energy that surrounds you.

'Enterprising doesn't just relate to the ability to make money. Being enterprising also means feeling good enough about yourself, having enough self worth to want to seek advantages and opportunities that will make a difference to your future.' ~Jim Rohn

Money may make the world go round but there are many things in life that no amount of money can touch or buy. Many today seem to have a low sense of self worth or don't feel confident enough in their own unique abilities. This is a great pity. At the heart of all our Gospel stories is about Jesus wanting to instil confidence and belief into everyone he met. Many of the stories recall how people were transformed, bubbling over with a sense of freedom and new beginnings. Such a feel good factor wasn't false or temporary. It was life changing. Do I trust and believe in my own abilities? Can I take one positive step forward today? Can I help someone I know feel better about themselves?

'The foundations for a better tomorrow must be laid today' ~Author Unknown

The image of a foundation is one that is often used to explain the important things in our lives which give deep meaning and value. In our Gospels Jesus uses the image of building on rock or sand. A house built on rock can withstand any flood where as the one built on sand will collapse. A poor foundation may be the result of a geological fault where the earth collapses underneath, it may be due to poor materials or poor construction.
We too are challenged to look at the foundations of our own lives. There is much goodness, trust and love in many of our foundations. We need to hold all of these and much more. It is good news and makes you who you are. The poor foundations are areas in all of our lives that need improving. For every one of us this area is going to be different. Every poor foundation can be strengthed into something positive and worthwhile.
