Despite coming from a rich background Gilbert chose to live a life of poverty giving much of his wealth to the poor. He was the founder of the order called the Gilbertines that had its origins in England. They followed the rule of St.Benedict. The order made great progress until it was dissolved by Henry VIII and was never revived. Gilbert had provided a remarkable witness to poverty and this was recognised when he was canonised a saint.
Today is his feast day and we ask his many blessings on us. Amen
