He is the first canonized saint from Ecuador. His personal devotional life, meticulously recorded in a spiritual diary and detailing the love of God inspired all that he did and wrote. He had an international reputation as a writer and teacher. He also had great devotion to the Sacred Heart. He was canonized a saint by Pope John Paul II on Mission Sunday 21st Oct 1984.
