‘It’s a small world but I wouldn’t want to paint it!’ ~Steven Wright
We often talk about how small our world is, especially when it comes to communicating by phone, texting, emails and so on. Air travel has also made access to every country in our world so much easier. But our world is still a vast place. The population is just over 6.5 billion or 6,500 million people, which is staggering. There are 193 countries in the world and 6,700 known languages. There is such a variety of cultures, customs, traditions and religions all over the world.
During the coming week all eyes of the world will be on Rome and the election of a new pope. With over 1.2 billion Catholics spread right across the world, it is indeed a job with massive responsibilities. There will be many predictions about who will get it. A pessimist will say he will be a safe bet, who will keep things going as they are and who really won’t rock the boat. An optimist will say he will be a shepherd with energy, vision, courage, bravery and someone who will guide the church forward with confidence and hope. Only time will tell. There is little we can do as we watch from the sidelines but we can pray to the Holy Spirit to guide all those involved to choose a good pope.
