Thought For The Week

‘The week that changed the world continues to change our lives’ ~Darby Dugger

It’s been a late spring for farmers. The cold weather and sometimes very wet weather have delayed putting out the cattle. When cows and calves are put out onto grass for the first time in the spring, they love the freedom. They jump, run and skip with delight. It is always a lovely sight.

As we begin our journey through Holy Week there is a sense of freedom that comes with the week that it is. We are invited to allow it to touch and be part of our lives. This brings a welcome freedom. Many are looking for answers to our deepest questions that life keeps throwing at us. We sometimes look for these answers in the wrong places. Holy Week allows our search for some of these answers easier. Holy Week allows us to find connections to parts of the story that make sense to us.

The events of Good Friday in particular connect with lots of our stories. The cross stands for the difficulties, the struggles, the pain, the disappointments and the setbacks we all experience from time to time. If the story of Holy Week ended on Good Friday then it could easily have been named ‘Bad Friday’ or ‘Black Friday’. But it is good because of what happened on Easter Sunday morning and the Resurrection. The cross became a sign of hope, a sign of freedom and new beginnings. It became a sign that there is a better way and a sign that darkness will always be replaced by light.

During the coming week that is Holy Week we welcome Jesus into our lives. We ask him to hold our entire story, to hold everything that is going on for us, to hold the stuff that is dragging us down, to hold everything that could be better, to hold all the beautiful stuff and to hold our dreams and hopes. I hope the week that changed the world will continue to change your life for the better.
