Camillus is a good example of a saint who cannot be claimed to have led a pious life from childhood. Six feet six inches tall and strongly built, he put his youthful physical energies into soldiering, fighting and gambling.

But his life was to change when gambling brought him to nothing. He eventually was ordained and dedicated his life to working with the sick. He insisted that hospitals should be well insulated, provide a good diet, isolate those with infectious dieseases and always seek a cure, not writing off anyone as incurable. Miracles were attributed to him during his life and many more after his death. He was made patron of hospitals, the sick and nurses.
