"The flower does not bear the root. The root bears the flower and the flower is merely the evidence of the vitality of the root." ~ Woodview Wilson
We are about to say goodbye to the year just gone. There are parts of the year just gone, that we"re glad to leave behind. It may have been a personal tragedy, bereavement, an illness, family troubles, mistakes made and much more. For some the new year just cannot come soon enough. But there are also parts of this year that were special, influential and memorable. These moments are worth remembering and holding onto. Like the roots of a plant or tree they are vitally important. They can give us direction and sustenance as we begin a new year. We say thanks for God"s gentle presence in our lives throughout the year just gone. This includes both what was good and not so good. God"s continued blessings on each of us as we begin a new year.

(P.S As we journey through Christmas/New Year its time to relax and take it easy. Our thoughts and pictures from here to Jan 2nd will be taken from my book 'A Year In reflection' which is a collection of the best of 365 thoughts and photographs from this website. From Jan 2nd everything will be back to new photos and thoughts. Thanks....James

‘Our task is to seek and find Christ in our world as it is and not as it might be.' ~Thomas Merton
The Pieta by Michelangelo is one of the world's most famous sculptures. It is of Mary holding the body of Jesus at the foot of the cross and is so lifelike that one can almost feel the heartbreak of a mother holding her lifeless son. Back in 1972 a man with a hammer jumped the railing and smashed the statue fifteen times with a hammer. It broke into over fifty big pieces and countless more tiny pieces. Sympathy, advice and money poured into the Vatican from all over the world. Many doubted it could be repaired but for the next year a team worked on putting it all back piece by piece. A year later it was unveiled and looked as it was except for a scar that they left on the veil of Mary to remind people of what happened and that nothing in this world is perfect, even the Pieta.

Our thoughts and pictures from here to Jan 2nd will be taken from my book 'A Year In reflection' which is a collection of the best of 365 thoughts and photographs from this website. ‘Doing the best at this moment puts us in the best place for the next moment.’ ~Oprah Winfrey The strings of a guitar on their own are important. They are separate, different and unique. When they choose to come together they can make great sounds. It is the same with moments. Each day is made up of many moments and the vast majority of them are good and positive. God calls us to do our best with each moment that comes our way. This puts us in the best place for the next moment. All our moments put together can make for great sounds. This year is nearly out but there are still moments left to make them memorable and precious. These moments make today worthwhile and keeps us in touch with what’s important and life giving.

‘Don’t be envious if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. It’s also harder to cut.’ ~Author Unknown
It’s often we look at the other side of the fence. We look at people’s lifestyles, looks, fashion, and houses. Everything on the other side of the fence seems so attractive. It appears that other people have it so good. But the reality is that these people are looking over the fence too and wishing for what we have. What appears as the perfect lifestyle by someone else is often far from perfect. Our humble patch is where we will find all we need for fulfilment and progress. As we move closer towards a new year our humble patch may need clearing out. Once that’s done we can begin to look forward to new beginnings. God always encourages us to work with what we have and not with what others have. It’s a great formula for greener grass, on our side.

‘There’s none so blind as those who will not see.’ ~ Old Proverb
Some people have been credited with a quick eye and who miss absolutely nothing. However, in matters of general observation we do tend to leave out a lot. We think all greens are green until we take a walk out into the countryside. A simple Christmas candle in a Church or home can speak volumes about hope, light and life. With the build up to Christmas we may have been so busy and hectic that we could have our eyes closed to what’s really important. What’s really important can often happen in a moment and may never repeat itself again. This week after Christmas is a week to really unwind, relax and take it easy. We ask God to help us make the most of what’s precious and special in the closing days of this year.

‘Let those who never loved before love now. Let those who always loved, love a little more.’ Author Unknown
Hopefully your Christmas went well for you. Perhaps today St.Stephen’s Day, there is a sense of relief that it’s all over and looking forward now to the New Year. Even though Christmas stretches to twelve days we will now be replacing ‘Happy Christmas’ with ‘Happy New Year!’ But one thing about Christmas is that its real message should never be lost. The invitation is to carry it with us every single day. The real message of Christmas evolves around love. It is the energy that brings meaning and life to all we do. We can begin to find God’s love again in our lives and to share it with others no matter how small. These days are indeed sacred and special. It is up to us to make the most of them in whatever way we can.

'I am not alone as I thought I was. I am never alone at all. And that, of course, is the message of Christmas. We are never alone. Not when the night is darkest, the wind coldest, the world seemingly most indifferent. For this is still the time God chooses.' ~Taylor Caldwell
God will always choose the moment we do not expect. Just as we thought the stable was not the ideal place for a baby to be born so it is with our own lives. God chooses to be a part of our lives when we least expect it. Everyone who came to the first crib was welcome. The same goes with all of us this Christmas. No matter what our story, background or situation, we are all welcome at God"s crib. There are no barriers and no exceptions. Everyone is welcome and we are never alone. Wishing you a happy, holy and peaceful Christmas.

‘There are those who are so scrupulously afraid of doing wrong that they seldom venture to do anything.' ~Author Unknown

Everyone strides to give and do their best each day. It is what God asks of each of us. Sometimes we do get it wrong and most times we get it just about right. But getting it wrong is not so earth shattering that we can't pick up the pieces and learn from where we went wrong. On this Christmas Eve it’s good to know that now is an ideal time to begin to pick up those pieces and move forward with our lives. Christmas is not about getting it just perfect, cosy and right. A humble stable on the side of a hill was far from perfect. It is much more about doing my best in all my struggles and in what works best for me. That’s where God is most active in my life. No one can take that from me anytime.

(P.S As we head into Christmas time, its time to relax and take it easy. Our thoughts and pictures from here to Jan 2nd will be taken from my book 'A Year In reflection' which is a collection of the best of 365 thoughts and photographs from this website.
